Kathmandu, November 7
Approximately 4 million Covid vaccines donated by China to Nepal are at risk of going to waste as they are approaching their expiration date.
These vaccines were received on April 25 and April 27, 2021, through a grant from the Chinese government.
On April 25, 2021, China donated 3,443,360 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, followed by an additional 556,640 doses on April 27. Dr Sarvesh Sharma, Director of the Management Division at the Department of Health Services, stated that these vaccines have begun to expire as they are not suitable for use as booster doses.
The World Health Organization advised countries not to use the Sinopharm vaccines as a booster dose.
Even though these vaccines are nearing expiration, the government has not yet decided on a disposal plan for them.
