Khajura (Banke), May 21
In response to rising fire incidents and heat waves, Banke district’s Nepalgunj Sub-metropolis Wards 3 and 7 have launched a campaign to renovate traditional wells.
These efforts aim to provide water for firefighting in urban areas where narrow streets prevent access to fire engines and water tanks. Supported by the Nepal Red Cross Society, the initiative includes installing water tanks capable of holding at least 4,000 litres, connected to dry fire hydrants for emergency use.
Public awareness campaigns and the mobilisation of 183 volunteers have also been initiated to aid in fire control, rescue, and first aid.
Ward Chairperson Prashant Shrestha highlighted that two wells have already been revived, with locals responsible for their upkeep. Residents, like Chandra Kala Gurung, appreciate the rejuvenation, valuing the well water for its holy use in cultural ceremonies.
