Biratnagar, June 26
Continuous rainfall has led to severe flooding in Biratnagar, with over 500 houses submerged as rivers overflow into nearby settlements.
According to Morang Police Spokesperson DSP Gyanendra Bahadur Basnet, the floodwaters from the Sanghiya River to the east and the Kesaliya River to the west have inundated coastal settlements. The affected areas include Biratnagar Metropolitan City-6, where approximately 500 houses have been reported submerged by Ward No. 6 President Harishchandra Sahani.
Similarly, Ward No. 12 is experiencing significant flooding, with Ward President Hiralal Kamat confirming that more than 60 houses along the riverbanks are underwater. The local administration has urged residents to exercise caution as water levels continue to rise.
The relentless rain, which began on Tuesday night, has also prompted the closure of schools in Biratnagar. Most schools have been shut down following directives from the Metropolitan City to prioritise safety. The ongoing SEE Cup game at Shahid Stadium has been suspended due to waterlogging.
Biratnagar Metropolitan City spokesperson and Ward No. 5 President Santosh Nyaupane stated that most areas of Biratnagar are submerged. To accommodate those affected by the floods, schools and community buildings have been prepared as shelters, with 60 shelters ready for use.
Local authorities are actively working to rescue and provide aid to the affected residents, ensuring their safety during this crisis.
