Kathmandu, December 17

Nepal and a Chinese private sector company have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to export processed buffalo meat.

The agreement was inked between Nepal’s Himalayan Food International and China’s Shanghai Ziyan Food Company Limited during a program on Monday. Under the deal, Himalayan Food International will export 2.7 million metric tonnes of processed meat annually in the first phase.

A fully automated animal slaughterhouse will be established within six months in collaboration with Himalayan Food International, as outlined in the MoU. This follows the protocol signed during former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s visit to China, facilitating meat exports.

Established in 2011, Himalayan Food International specialises in processed meat exports. Shanghai Ziyan Food Company, with over 6,000 outlets across China, has pledged to invest Rs 20 billion in Nepal and provide technical assistance for buffalo husbandry.

Minister for Agriculture Ramnath Adhikari reiterated Nepal’s commitment to meeting Chinese standards for meat exports and ensuring quality production. Minister for Land Management Balaram Adhikari highlighted the agreement’s potential for job creation and economic development.

Chinese Ambassador Chen Song expressed satisfaction with the agreement’s progress, while officials noted that commercial buffalo farming is already underway in 30 local levels.
