Kathmandu, March 30
Animal rights activists have expressed concerns over various stray animals living on the streets of Kathmandu arguing they have been deprived of food during the nationwide lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus outbreak.
Around 26,000 dogs are said to be living on the streets of Kathmandu, according to the Federation of Animal Welfare Nepal. The number of monkeys in the valley is not known, but there are hundreds of monkeys in Pashupati and Swayambhu areas of Kathmandu. There are some cows also.
Deprived of food, the dogs have begun fighting frequently, causing more problems to the people, according to activist Sangeeta Sapkota. Sapkota warns that such angry dogs might attack people whenever they find it.
Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has claimed that it had directed its ward committees to feed the animals in their jurisdiction.
