Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has said that the budget allocated by the city government for e-sports was not for any organisation or one particular e-sport competition.
He says the funds will be used lawfully to promote e-sports in the country and will use it to host competitions like PubG and others.
In a post on Facebook, Shah said that it was wrong of Nepali media to think that the city was going to hand over the budget of Rs 10 million to one company to hold a competition.
“Esports is a part of sports and it is a billion-dollar industry. Nepal is slowly getting into it, and a team of Nepal is going to take part in the event that will be held in the Asian Game in Hangzhou,” said Shah on Facebook.
He said the city set aside a budget to promote and manage sports in the city and give young boys and girls the chance to make the country proud in events like the Asian Games.
Shah also said it was wrong of some Nepali media houses to defame others without understanding the issue and asked them to work ethically and lawfully.
Nepal Samacharpatra and Himalaya TV had prepared news reports suggesting Shah was handing over the budget set aside for e-sports to Routine of Nepal Banda, a Facebook page with a mass following that helped him during the mayoral elections.
