It has been 13 months since the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority filed a case on the notorious Baluwatar land scam. However, one of the defendants of the case, Nepali Congress leader Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar, is yet to receive the Special Court’s summons.
The anti-corruption constitutional body had indicted the opposition leader among three former ministers, 57 former or current government officials, and 115 former and current owners and users of the land in one of the biggest corruption cases of the country. But, the court has failed to make him receive the summons, and he continues to be listed as a fugitive.
A source informs the court had told the District Court in Gachhadar’s home district of Sunsari to serve the summons, but Gachhadar refused to accept that recently.
On March 6 last year, the Special Court had summoned him to be present in 15 days.
Claiming that Gachhadar incurred a loss of Rs 96.5 million, the commission in its writ petition has demanded that he pay the money and serve a jail sentence for eight to 10 years.
