Bhairahawa, June 26
Candidates for upcoming local level elections in Bhairahawa (Siddhartha Nagar Municipality) in Rupandehi district have been found soliciting votes during the silence period as well.
The Election Commission has barred parties and candidates from running any promotional activity on Monday and Tuesday, 48 hours before the voting day (Wednesday).
But, candidates of this Muslim community-dominated city attended various gatherings on the day of Eid and requested locals to vote for them while exchanging the festive greetings.
The Election Commission, however, has been a mute spectator to such activities.
Assistant chief of the Rupandehi District Election Office, Gopal Prasad Aryal, however, says his office has been monitoring activities of the party and action will be taken if anyone is found violating the election code of conduct.
He warns that the candidates will be fined or their nominations will be cancelled if they engaged themselves in electioneering during the silence period.
