Rupandehi, December 2

The business community in Butwal has staged a protest against the government-sponsored Constitution Amendment Bill that seeks to remove Hill districts from Province 5 and assimilate them into Province 4.

They have demanded that the government make adequate correction in the Bill to keep Province 5 intact.

Addressing a mass gathering after the rally, speakers expressed sadness over Thursday’s incident in which protesters vandalised a memorial dedicated to martyrs in Butwal. They asked political parties to make the movement organised.

Rupandehi has been erupting in protests for three days against the government bid to remove Hill districts currently in Province 5 and make them part of Province 4. On Thursday, the movement against the government plot turned anarchic with activists from the ruling Nepali Congress and the main opposition CPN-UML smashing the memorial.

On Friday, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Butwal) organised a rally in support of the Campaign for an Undivided Province 5. The rally taken out from Chauraha in Butwal converged into a mass gathering at Traffic Chok after passing through Milan Chok, Hospital Line, Amarpath, Haat Bazaar, Golpark and BTI.

The rallyists were demanding an undivided Province 5, withdrawal of the Bill and unity of the Himalayas, the Hills and the Tarai.
