Can’t hold polls in new local units on June 14, clarifies Election Commission

Kathmandu, May 25

The Election Commission has clarified that it cannot hold local level elections in newly announced rural municipalities and municipalities on the scheduled date of June 14.

The government on Monday had decided to establish 22 more local levels in Terai region so as to convince agitating Madheshi Morcha to take part in the elections.

But, the constitutional election body says holding the polls in new units will be logistically impossible as it has too few days to prepare voters’ list, voters’ identity cards among others.

It says the polls can be held only in 461 local levels which were already in existence.

Earlier, the commissioners themselves had expressed contrasting views about certainty of the polls after the government made the decision just 23 days before the scheduled polls.
