A family from Hetaunda in Makawanpur district took a critically injured man undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the Chitwan Medical College Teaching Hospital to a religious site for ‘pre-death’ rituals, without consulting the doctors involved in his treatment.
After the rituals, the family brought him back to the hospital.
Dinesh Khatiwada, 34, was seriously injured in a road accident on Friday last week. He was admitted to the hospital on the same day.
Khatiwada has a serious injury on head whereas the right hand has broken, informs Dr Ajit Shrestha in the hospital.
However, the family on Wednesday took him to Devghat on the bank of Narayani to perform Dashadan and Baitarani Daan, two major rituals that Hindus in Nepal perform as someone approaches death, informs the man’s relative Ishwari Adhikari.
The hospital administration, however, was informed of the incident. The patient’s elder brother met the hospital administrators saying he could not afford treatment, hence doing the rituals would be a better option, informs the hospital’s chief administrative office Pratap Devkota.
Then, the family brought him back to the hospital in the evening. However, there was not any ventilator available for him, so the case was referred to Purano Medical College in Chitwan.
The hospital’s public relations officer Durga Neupane says his condition is critical.
