Kathmandu, May 24

The Nepali Congress has asked the KP Sharma Oli government to create a conducive environment for talks with the United Demcoratic Madheshi Front.

This comes after the government invited the UMDF and the NC for talks aimed at discussing the latter’s demands. But the UDMF turned down the invite, calling the government to invite the Federal Alliance, of which UDMF is a constituent, for talks. Moreover, the front said it will not hold talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa.

The main opposition has requested the government to hold informal talks with the front for creation of a conducive environment for formal talks.

The Congress said it is ready to help the government make upcoming talks result-oriented.  After the meeting, NC leader Mahesh Acharya said: We did not talk much as the UDMF did not attend it. We have requested the government to create a conducive environment for talks by finalising the jurisdiction of the political committee.

Minister for Law, Agni Kharel, said the government informed the main opposition about efforts aimed at holding talks with the UDMF. He informed that UDMF expressed inability to attend the talks though the government had scheduled the same after consultations with the UDMF.
