Kathmandu, February 22
International corruption watchdog Transparency International published the 2017 report of its annual Corruption Perception Index, according to which Nepal is gradually improving.
Nepal has been ranked in the 122nd position with a score of 31 where 100 means very clean and 0 means very corrupt.
In the 2016 index, Nepal was in the 131st position with a score of 29.
Total 180 countries have been included in the index and on the top of it are mostly European countries. New Zealand tops the chart followed by Denmark, Finland, Norway and Switzerland.
In South Asia, Bhutan is the cleanest. It is in the 26th position with a score of 67. Above Nepal are India (81st position) , Sri Lanka (91st position), the Maldives (112th position) and Pakistan (117th position).
Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in 143rd and 177th positions respectively.
“This year’s Corruption Perceptions Index highlights that the majority of countries are making little or no progress in ending corruption, while further analysis shows journalists and activists in corrupt countries risking their lives every day in an effort to speak out,” the organisation says.
