Kathmandu, March 18
A day before Prince Harry’s arrival to Nepal on a five-day visit, Gurkha Army Ex-Servicemen’s Organisation staged a demonstration outside the British Embassy in Kathmandu on Friday. Through the British Embassy, GAESO also submitted a five-point memorandum to British Prime Minister David Cameron.
Around 100 ex-servicemen and their family members staged the demonstration outside the embassy in Lainchaur, at a time when Nepal and the United Kingdom are celebrating the 200 anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
GAESO has demanded that the secret treaty between Nepal and the UK, that made way for recruitment of Nepali youth in the British army, be made public, and the British government answer queries related to 60,000 Gurkha soldiers, who died in action during the first and second world wars.
After handing over the memorandum, GAESO President Padam Bahadur Gurung took objection to the secret deal allowing the British government to sell Nepali soldiers to the Sultan of Brunei by conducting a head count.
By staging a demonstration outside the British embassy a day ahead of Prince Harry’s arrival, GAESO is trying to draw the British government’s attention towards the Gurkha soldiers’ demands.
