Difficult to conduct elections in Madhesh if status quo persists: Yadav tells Prachanda

Kathmandu, March 17

Nepal’s chief election commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav has told Prime Minister Prachanda that it would be difficult to conduct civic elections in the Terai on May 14 if the status quo persists.

The statement comes a day after Madhesh-based political parties withdrew support to the ruling coalition and announced agitation to press the governemnt to put the constitution amendment to vote in Parliament. Yadav is also learnt to have urged Prachanda to create a favourable envioronment for all parties to take part in the elections.

“We still have time to get all political parties on board. We should create a situation in which all political parties iowm up to the elections,” Yadav told mediapersons after a meeting with the Prime Minister.

Yadav informed that the commission has started mobilising civil servants for the upcoming elections. He said he came to meet the Prime Minister to inform him of the hurdles the commission faces in conducting elections in Madhesh.
