Kathmandu, May 6
After Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba failed to topple the KP Oli government due to reluctance on the part of the UCPN-Maoist, a passionate discussion has begun within the Congress fold about Deuba’s role in the whole saga. Two dozen NC central working committee members held a meeting after the failed bid, which concluded that the move failed because Deuba “went it alone.”
After the Maoist party was unwilling to support Deuba in his bid to topple the government, the two dozen leaders held a meeting under party leader Prakash Man Singh. Following the meeting, party treasurer Sita Devi Yadav, central committee member Singh and a number of other leaders told Deuba not to take unilateral moves.
Leaders, including Yadav, central member Singh, Minendra Rijal, Ananda Prasad Dhungana, Dilendra Badu and Dil Bahadur Gharti had reached Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkantha to draw his attention towards the matter.
They expressed dissatisfaction with Deuba for showing immaturity in his bid to topple the government, a source informed. The dissatisfied side maintains that this happened because Deuba failed to move the party ahead by taking institutioanl decisions and did not do adequate homework to take the UCPN-Maoist into confidence. That’s why the Oli government survived, it concluded.
The party lost its standing in the eyes of the people because of immaturity on the part of party leadership, a Congress central member told Onlinekhabar. The member said: The outcome of the effort was not favourable because the leadership did not bother to hold discussions within the party on serious matter like toppling a government. We told him that activities like these will weaken the party.
On his part, Deuba promised to move ahead by holding discussions with all concerned. Right after his return from a recent visit to India, Deuba had offered Maoist Chair Prachanda the post of prime minister. He made this offer without informing the party central committee and getting its approval for the same, the dissatisfied lot says. This way, Deuba has tarnished the image of the party, it goes.
Meanwhile, treasurer Yadav denied calling Deuba an ‘immature player’ vis-a-vis his effort to topple the Oli government, though she said she was in the team that met Deuba.
