Kathmandu, January 2
Few protesters were injured when police personnel lobbed tear gas shells into a crowd of students aligned to the CPN-UML in front of the Tri-Chandra Campus in Jamal of Kathmandu on Tuesday.
The students were protesting the government’s recent decision to hike the price of petroleum products. They had also used the demonstration as an opportunity to express their anger against Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, his Nepali Congress party, the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav, who according to them were blocking the UML’s way to the government leadership.
UML-aligned student wing’s Secretary RC Lamichhane says dozens of his cadres including Vice-Chairman Mahesh Bartaula have been hurt as police used force against the peaceful demonstration.
Lamichhane says his organisation will intensify the protests as the security personnel tried to stop them today.
Meanwhile, traffic management in the city has turned problematic following the demonstration and clash between two sides.
