Maestro Amber Gurung, the composer of Nepal’s national anthem is no more. Gurung, who served Nepali music for over 60 years, was one of the most revered composers of his time. Although, his fans will never get to hear him perform in person again, his songs remain etched in the memory of all everyone in the Nepali-speaking world.

Nau Lakh Tara Udaye
This song, also referred to as the anthem of the Nepali Diaspora, was reportedly banned by the All India Radio for spreading “anti-India” feelings. The song, to which Gurung lent his own voice, has become synonymous with his name.

Rato ra Chandra Surya
This song, composed by Gurung, has been adopted by Nepal army as its anthem. This song evokes in Nepalis a sense of national pride like no other tune.

Yo Jindagi ko Ke Kura
The song has been a companion for a generation of people in times of grief and loneliness.

Ukali Chadhda
The song definitely makes it to the list of favourite Amber Gurung songs for even those who have not followed Nepali music for a long time.

Eh Kanchhaa
If you were in Nepal in the 90s, you’d remember the veteran singer Aruna Lama sing this tune on Nepal TV.
