Kathmandu, March 14
A subcommittee in the House of Representatives has recommended the government impose a ban on the import of drinking water so as to promote the domestic industry.
The market monitoring subcommittee under the Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Interest Committee prepared a report with this suggestion, and the committee also endorsed the report, informs the committee chairman Bimal Prasad Shressvastav.
The subcommittee coordinator Prakash Rasaili says the lawmakers found Nepal was producing sufficient drinking water for domestic use, hence its import would not be desirable.
Meanwhile, the committee also told the government to facilitate the export of Nepali water abroad.
According to the Department of Customs, Nepal imported around 35,000 litres of drinking water by spending Rs 2.3 million last fiscal year.
