If you don’t fix capitals, don’t appoint chiefs too: UML’s Gyawali

CPN-UML leader Pradeep Gyawali

Kathmandu, January 7

CPN-UML leader Pradeep Gyawali says the incumbent government should not appoint province chiefs if it is not going to name capitals of provinces.

The left alliance leader’s statement follows reports in which Law Minister Yagya Bahadur Thapa has been quoted that the government is going to skip the responsibility as the decision might fuel controversies and subsequent protests in various cities of the country.

Gyawali says the failure to name capitals and let provincial assemblies decide them will be an indication of the government’s incapacity and against sentiments of federalism.

The leader comments that preparations to administer the oath to provincial lawmakers in Kathmandu will be a matter of shame.

“You do everything you should not have done, but skip doing what you should not have done,” he says, “Then, why should you appoint province chiefs because the President can administer the oath?”

Gyawali also suggests chief judges of provincial high courts can also be assigned to administer the oath after clearing the constitutional hurdle if the government is adamant on its plan to skip naming capitals.
