Kathmandu, May 23
Lawmakers in Nepal have demanded the government ban beauty pageants in the country.
The demand comes after a young woman exposed she was raped in the name of a beauty pageant around eight years ago.
Speaking in a meeting of the Women and Social Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives on Monday, CPN-Maoist Centre lawmaker Amrita Thapa says the state would not lose anything even if such events were banned.
“In the past also, we had said the state should seriously think about such events,” she said, “If it does not benefit the state, we shall be able to stop them.”
Meanwhile, lawmakers have demanded the removal of the statute of limitation for rape cases in Nepal.
