Kathmandu, November 25

Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, a leader of the ruling CPN-Maoist Centre, announced on Friday he will vote against any Constitution amendment proposal that seeks to split Province 5.

Rayamajhi said it will make no difference to him even if the party takes action against him for voting against such a proposal. Rayamajhi, speaking at a face-to-face that Reporters’ Club Nepal had organised, said: For me, the country and the people are most important. The party comes after them.

There is no dispute over Province 5, Rayamajhi pointed, adding that splitting the province will serve no one.

He said: All parties in Province 5 are against splitting it. People will launch a movement on their own if anyone tries to change its boundaries.

Meanwhile, NP Saud, a leader of the ruling coalition partner Nepali Congress, stressed the need to proceed with the Constitution amendment process by taking the main opposition CPN-UML into confidence.

He described the UML as an important stakeholder in the whole process and added: A new conflict will begin in the country if Madheshi parties continue to put forth new preconditions and stakeholders fail to come to an understanding.

Saud accused Prime Minister Prachanda of trying to bring the Constitution amendment proposal in a hurry.

He said those living in Kathmandu are trying to decide which province should Kailali-Kanchanpur be part of, instead of letting local people decide the matter. Saud warned Kathmandu (the centre) not to take undue interest in matters concerning the people of Kailali and Kanchanpur, telling the centre to let the inhabitants of those districts decide the matter.
