Kathmandu, May 13

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said on Friday that the government is capable of building the Tarai-Kathmandu fast track, both in terms of technology and resources. PM Oli said this while responding to lawmakers’ questions in the Parliament.

Well before the start of the construction work, the project is generating a heated debate with political heavyweights standing in favour of and against giving the project to an Indian company. Two days ago, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba had stood in favour of handing over the project to the foreign company that had prepared the fast track project’s detailed project report. Deuba had opined that Nepal lacks institutional capacity to develop such an ambitious project.

Former prime minister and Naya Shakti Nepal coordinator Baburam Bhattarai had stood in favour of developing the project using national capital.

On his part, Oli said: This time, we had a great discussion on whether the government should or should not build a national project. I have taken concerns of lawmakers regarding the project positively. In keeping with directives from the parliamentary finance and development committees, we proposed developing the project on our own.
