Nepal govt, Madheshi Morcha agree to conduct polls in two phases

Kathmandu, April 22

It has become almost certain that Nepal will hold local level elections, which are taking place after two decades, in two phases as the agitating Madheshi Morcha has agreed to take part in the polls.

Following the latest round of negotiations on Saturday evening, both sides have also agreed to work on revising the government’s fresh constitution amendment proposal registered in Parliament to address the demands of the Madheshi Morcha, which has been in agitation following the promulgation of the new constitution in 2015.

Morcha has also agreed to postpone its agitation it announced following the announcement of polls few months ago.

A Cabinet meeting on Sunday is likely to formally announce that the first phase of the elections will take place on May 14, as was announced earlier and the second one two weeks after.

Polls in all the districts of Province 2 and some districts of Province 1 and 5 will be deferred, according to the sources.

However, the polls would be held in those places within mid-June, a Morcha leader informed.
