Kathmandu, December 15
Nepal has been importing agricultural yields worth Rs 200 billion a year on average, informs a recent government report.
According to a report published by the National Planning Commission, the apex development planning body of the country, the agricultural produce imports are rising along with an increase in Nepalis’ purchasing power on average.
In recent years, rice has been one of the 10 products that the country spends the highest amount to import whereas maize is on the list of the top 20 products, according to the report. Other biggest imported items include potatoes, peas, wheat, and onions.
The report was prepared based on the import data from the fiscal year 2015/16 to 2019/20.
The report has suggested various initiatives–categorised into policy-based, institutional, and strategic–for control of the imports of agricultural yields.
