Nepal not to participate in Emerging Teams Cup

Kathmandu, February 21

Nepal won’t be able to participate in the upcoming ACC Emerging Teams Cup.

After Hong Kong and UAE withdrew their participation from the tournament earlier, a meeting of the board held on Tuesday announced that the tournament would only feature teams from test-playing nations making Nepal’s participation impossible. Jagat Tamata, coach of the Nepali national team confirmed the news.

Earlier, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had announced that the Emerging Teams Cup would feature the U-23 teams from four test-playing nations and four teams from other nations.

After ACC’s decision to only allow test-playing nations to participate in the tournament, Emerging Cup will now feature the U-23 teams from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh along with Afghanistan’s national team.

Team Nepal, which had earlier found some success in international cricket tournaments, had seen its participation in the Emerging Cup as an opportunity to play against test-playing nations. The tournament was also crucial for the Nepali team which would otherwise play against UAE and Hong Kong, its two main rivals.
