Kathmandu, December 8
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has urged members states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to give fresh impetus to the stalled regional body.
Oli, the executive head of the country which is currently chairing the organisation, says, “Giving fresh impetus to the stalled SAARC process including through the early convening of the summit can rekindle hope among our people and provide ground to move forward.”
His statement comes at a time when it has already been more than six years since the regional organisation held its last summit. Arguably due to the ignorance of the regional superpower, India, and its conflict with Pakistan, regular activities of the bloc have been affected.
In a message issued on the occasion of the 36th Charter Day of the SAARC, Oli said, “Time has come to move forward with concrete action in the ground with needed political will and commitment.”
SAARC charter characterises South Asia’s shared vision, collective resolve and mutual pursuit to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the region through eradication of poverty, accelerated economic growth and advancement in socio-cultural development, he said as informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
