Kathmandu, November 29
Issuing a notice, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority has mandated internet service providers (ISPs) to respond within 24 hours regarding the status of TikTok, following government directives on its shutdown.
A public notice was issued by the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, demanding prompt information on the execution of the decision to terminate TikTok services. Through the notice, NTA has emphasised that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe will result in severe repercussions, potentially including license cancellation as per the Telecommunications Act, 1997.
Bijay Kumar Roy, Director of the Authority, commented that the notice was to remind the ISPs to respond and adhere to the government’s decision to shut down TikTok. Stressing its urgency, Roy said, the authority is seeking responses within 24 hours of the notice. Notably, as of now, no service provider has implemented this directive, prompting heightened scrutiny from the authority.
On November 13, the Council of Ministers decided to impose the TikTok ban in Nepal citing its negative impact on social harmony and the social environment.
