Top leaders of the main opposition Nepali Congress and the ruling UCPN-Maoist held discussions on Tuesday after the three parties — the NC, the Maoist party and the CPN-UML — failed to reach an understanding with the agitating United Democratic Madheshi Front.

UCPN-Maoist Chair Prachanda, also coordinator of the high-level political mechanism, had reached NC President Sushil Koirala’s residence in Maharajgunj for talks on the standoff. The two sides discuss efforts aimed at reaching a deal with the UDMF and constitution amendment.

Speaking with the media after the talks, Prachanda said: Efforts to reach an understanding will continue before and during the session of the Parliament.

Chin Kaji Shrestha, NC Chief Whip, told Onlinekhabar: How to address the Madhesh’s aspirations is the main question. We have agreed on standing as one on constitution amendment.

While Prachanda represented the Maoist party, NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel, General Secretary Prakash Man Singh, leader Mahesh Acharya and NC Chief Whip Shrestha represented the Congress in the talks.
