Kathmandu, August 12
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba says the ruling coalition partner CPN-Maoist Centre did not let him commit to endorsing the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement signed with the United States government from the parliament.
During a meeting of his Nepali Congress party officials in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Deuba’s deputy in the party, Bimalendra Nidhi, had questioned why the coalition did not mention the controversial issue in the common minimum programme unveiled a few days ago. Earlier, the main opposition leader KP Sharma Oli had also asked the same question to the PM in parliament.
In response, Deuba said he wanted to include a statement about endorsing the MCC, but the Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal did not agree on that.
The 2017 agreement has been a bone of contention in Nepali politics since it was signed and the entire society seems divided about it.
Likewise, the NC leaders also questioned him why the common minimum programme did not have a mentioning of the alleged border dispute with China as claimed by the NC leader Jeevan Bahadur Shahi.
Deuba said Dahal did not agree on that also.
