Kathmandu, October 27
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has begun preparations for an upcoming visit to China, which is tentatively scheduled for late November or early December, as confirmed by his secretariat.
According to sources, Oli convened key ministers and officials from the Foreign Ministry and other development-related departments to assess progress on agreements with China. He has directed them to follow up on these projects, particularly those under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) framework, signed in 2017 but facing implementation delays that have raised concerns on the Chinese side.
In light of this planned visit, Oli has expressed interest in understanding the status of BRI and other bilateral agreements with China. Traditionally, new Nepali prime ministers prioritise a visit to India, the southern neighbour. However, after assuming office for the fourth time, Oli first attended the United Nations General Assembly in the United States, where he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi briefly but reportedly did not establish a strong rapport.
Oli’s upcoming visit to China is expected to cover discussions on economic development frameworks, including BRI, as well as energy and trade collaboration, sources from Baluwatar stated.
“A visit to India may also happen in due course, but for now, a China visit is planned,” a close source to the prime minister mentioned. “He has requested updates on bilateral agreements and progress on essential development projects. Preparations are underway.”
