Kathmandu, July 16

The government has barred public vehicles from plying the BP Highway from 6 pm to 5 am everyday claiming many vehicles met with accidents during nighttime along the serpentine road.

Spokesperson at the Department of Transport Management, Tok Raj Pandey, says the rule will be strictly applied in the Nepalthok-Bhiman section of the Highway connecting Kathmandu Valley with eastern Terai.

Pandey also informs that the rule was introduced upon finding that many vehicles without the route permit have been plying the road during nights due to lack of monitoring.

Meanwhile, the Department introduced some other new rules for long-route vehicles as the new fiscal year begins today.

According to a new provision, public buses coming in and going out of Kathmandu Valley cannot make a round of the Ring Road to pick or drop passengers at other points. It means once leaving the New Bus Park of Gongabu, the vehicles must directly go to Kalanki via Swayambhu and leave the Valley.

Only two places of the Valley–old and new bus parks–have been fixed as arrival and departure points for buses moving between Kathmandu and other places of the country.

The Department claims the rule was introduced to control traffic congestion along roads of the Valley, the Ring Road in particular.

Those breaking the rule will be booked.
