The KP Sharma Oli government’s days are numbered, according to Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, chair of the UCPN-Maoist and coordinator of the high-level political mechanism.
During an interview with Onlinekhabar, which coincides with the completion of the Oli government’s 100 days, Prachanda said a national government will take shape after the completion of the main opposition Nepali Congress’s general convention slated for the month of Falgun.
The unity government, according to Prachanda, will comprise the Congress and Madhesh-centric parties that have been spearheading a movement in the plains. He said: Certain leaders want Prachanda to topple the government.
Onlinekhabar asked this leader, who was a teacher before joining politics, to evaluate the performance of this government. And he said: Saturday’s discussions at Baluwatar, Prime Minister’s official residence and the launch of the mega reconstruction campaign give this government pass marks.”
In course of 100 days, PM Oli has undergone positive changes. “He is more flexible towards the United Democratic Madheshi Front’s demands these days,” Prachanda said, indicating that a political understanding — regarding the front’s demands — is likely to materialise within January 19.
Right after the formation of this government, our attention shifted towards talks with the UDMF. In particular, our party, the UCPN-Maoist, tried to sort out issues, which agitating Madheshi parties, Tharu communities and indigenous nationalities, have been raising, through talks by adopting maximum flexibility. I have told UDMF leaders clearly: “You should not show rigidity (on your demands). I have told them to show a bit of flexibility and said I am in talks with the government.”
I have been calling for flexibility on the issue of province delineation. In the nine-point agreement, the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML have agreed on formation of a seven-province model. I called for little flexibility on this framework, but the two parties did not agree on the same.
