Kathmandu, June 28
The Supreme Court has issued an interim order directing the government to register temporary marriages of same-sex couples.
The single bench of Judge Til Prasad Shrestha, on Tuesday, issued an interim order, instructing the authorities to make necessary arrangements for registering marriages of same-sex couples.
The order specifies that the marriages should be recorded as temporary.
The Blue Diamond Society had filed a petition in the Supreme Court stating that existing laws in Nepal act as obstacles to the registration of same-sex marriages.
The petition filed by the Blue Diamond Society seeks an amendment to the provisions of the Civil Code 2017 concerning marriage registration. The purpose of the petition is to challenge and demand changes to the existing provisions to enable the registration of same-sex marriages.
The Supreme Court has further ordered the government to provide a written response regarding the legal framework pertaining to the registration of marriages for the same sex.
Around 15 years ago, the Supreme Court issued a ruling allowing same-sex couples of legal age to live together. However, same-sex marriage is not officially recognised within the provisions of the Civil Code.
