Saptari, September 16
A 17-year-old girl, who was reportedly raped by a group of men on Monday morning, committed suicide the next day, in Saptari of southeastern Nepal.
The girl’s mother has told police that her daughter was stressed after some leaders in the community barred her from contacting the law enforcers and file a complaint against four suspects, reports Rastriya Samachar Samiti.
SP Rajendra Dhamala, the District Police Office Chief, says the police were informed of the incident only after the girl’s death. Subsequently, they have launched an investigation.
The alleged victim’s body has been sent to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, for postmortem.
The girl from Dakneshwari municipality-7 of the district was gangraped on her way to her paddy field on Monday morning. Following the incident, local leaders had held a meeting, which decided to bar the victim from approaching police. They had reportedly concluded that forcing the suspects to give the victim Rs 55,000 as a compensation would suffice.
After the mother’s statement, police have arrested three community leaders. Alleged rapists, however, are on the run, and a manhunt has been launched.
