Nepal’s Himalayas and high hills have experienced snowfall. Daman of Makwanpur district and highlands of Rolpa district witnessed snowfall.
The snowfall has brought happiness to farmers in the Himalayan region. At the same time, life has come to a halt due to snowfall, with people becoming unable to venture out of their homes.
Mugu district, which had been reeling under prolonged drought, also experienced snowfall, causing temperature in district headquarters Gamgadhi to plummet to -10 degrees Celsius.
Snowfall had begun in high-altitude settlements of Mugu from Tuesday evening itself. In Gamgadhi, snowfall has been continuing since last night. The weather monitoring station in Gamgadhi informed that there was snowfall of up to seven inches in Gamgadhi as of 8 am.
In Mugu, settlements like Dolfu, Mugu, Kimri, Pulu, Rara, Murmatap, Khamale, Sorukot, Dumana, Talcha, Rara airport, Mandu, Tallekh and Sobha experienced snowfall measuring more than three feet.
Locals have been unable to come out of their houses.
Goods carriers bound for Mugu have remained stuck along different sections of the Karnali Highway.
Schools have remained closed, with movement obstructed due to the snowfall.
Farmers in Jumla district are happy, as snowfall has ended the spell of drought continuing there for six months. Local farmers believe that snowfall will be good for crops like barley, wheat, corn, potato and apple orchards. With snowfall, markets and villages wear a deserted look. Most of the government offices and offices of different organisations have closed.
With the snowfall, highlands of Jajarkot district have been without telephone connection. Phone lines are dead in the district’s northern parts, including Ramidanda, Nayakvada, Rokayagaun, Paik, Daha, Majkot, Garkhakot and Kortang.
Lower climes of Jajarkot are experiencing rainfall. Senior citizens and children are bearing the brunt as snowfall and rainfall have caused the mercury to plummet.
Rainfall and snowfall have brought happiness to farmers, who feel they will be good for crops, Dil Bahadur Shahi of Garkhakot said.
In Bajura, district headquarters Martadi, Kolti, Pandusen, Dhamkane, Dahakot, Manakot, Kotila and Jagannath, among others, are witnessing heavy snowfall. With telephone connection disrupted due to the snowfall, people in Kolti have been experiencing inconveniences.
In Taplejung, highlands are witnessing snowfall and rainfall, bringing life to a halt. This is the third time in a year that Taplejung has seen snowfall. Places like Olangchungknola, Yangma, Ghunsa, Lelep, Gyabla, Topkegola, Pathibhara and Fale have witnessed snowfall measuring up to two feet. In higher climes, temperatures have plummeted, local people said.
