Kathmandu, January 31. Nepali Congress’ establishment faction (led by Sushil Koirala) has proposed that the party have three vice-presidents.
According to the proposal, there shall be one senior VP and two VPs. The senior VP will be elected by party representatives and the other two VPs will be nominated by the party president. The Koirala camp also wants the party’s treasurer, who in the past has been elected by party representatives, to be nominated by the president.
Sushil Koirala, one of the main contenders for the party leadership, is in distress. Ram Chandra Paudel, Sujata Koirala and Krishna Prasad Sitaula are all member of his camp, and want to run for party leadership. Koirala had been looking for an idea to manage all their ambitions to make way for himself.
Meanwhile, party senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is Koirala’s main rival, is unlikely to agree to this new proposal. Deuba stands to benefit if Koirala camp fails to accommodate its leaders, and all of them announce their candidacy for the top post. If that happens, Deuba’s chances of winning will increase.
