Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud case: Chhabilal Joshi granted release on Rs 5 million bail

Kathmandu, January 20

Former DIG of Nepal Police, Chhabilal Joshi, implicated in the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud case, has been granted release on a bail of Rs 5 million.

The Kathmandu District Court issued the order on Monday, and Joshi is currently in the process of depositing the bail amount.

Joshi had previously faced charges of cooperative fraud, organised crime, and money laundering at the Kaski District Court, where he was released after depositing Rs 8.8 million in bail.

The Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud case involves 39 defendants accused of embezzling Rs 1.19 billion from 690 depositors.

Among others involved, the cooperative’s audit committee member, Sunita Newa, and board member, Kamal Lama, were released on bail of Rs 400,000 and Rs 300,000, respectively.

Similarly, Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party and former Home Minister, was released earlier on a bail of Rs 6 million.
