Talks between Education Ministry, student organisations over school fees a dud

Students

Kathmandu, May 5

Thursday’s school fee monitoring talks between the Ministry of Education and 13 student organisations ended on an inconclusive note. The talks ended thus as the ministry failed to address the demands of the student bodies.

UP Laimchhane, spokesperson for Nepal Students’ Union, said they ended the talks as the ministry did not bother to address their demands. The student bodies have been seeking the implementation of a 10-point agreement reached last year.

We urged the education ministry to monitor fees, which private and boarding schools have hiked, as per last year’s 10-point deal, he said. “On their part, ministry officials said early monitoring of fees is impossible. They offered to start monitoring the fees after forming a mechanism. We did not agree with them.”

The officials also asked student bodies to stop monitoring school fees on their own.

Hari Lamsal, spokesperson for the ministry, said they will form a monitoring mechanism after fresh talks with student bodies. We will hold talks tomorrow as well, Lamsal said, adding: We will form a committee by including student bodies’ representatives and do the monitoring work.

With Thursday’s meeting failing to come to an understanding, student bodies continued with school fee monitoring
