Nepal needs education policy that takes care of its needs: PM
Kathmandu, February 28
The government is gearing up to introduce a new education policy for the ‘development of the education sector’ in keeping with the needs of the country.
As part of preparations towards this end, the Ministry of Education organised a national workshop on ‘National Education Commission for Formulation of a New Education Policy for New Nepal, on Sunday.
Inaugurating the workshop on Sunday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stressed the need to draft an education policy that suits the country rather than copying policies of other countries. He said Nepal’s educational development has not been satisfactory because education administrators have merely copied educational policies of other countries regarded as ‘successful’ instead of identifying Nepal’s needs and devising policies accordingly.
Students have not been able to showcase their talents because of flaws in educational policies, Oli maintained. Each student has different sets of talents, Oli observed, adding that the state should provide opportunities so that these students can unveil their full potential.
Famous singer Narayan Gopal and athlete Baikuntha Manandhar would have slipped into oblivion if they had been pressed to play tennis and sing songs, respectively, Oli said, adding that the country needs educational policy that taps talents that individuals have.
At the workshop, Education Minister Giri Raj Mani Pokharel said the present education policy will not lead to educational development. He stressed the need to introduce a new educational policy and restructure the education sector.
The ministry organised the workshop to receive suggestions on the formation of the commission. Education experts, education administrators and chiefs of major political parties’ education departments, among others, are taking part in the workshop.
