Kathmandu, June 11

Two women have been allegedly killed for dowry in Sarlahi.

The cases were reported in Pharadawa and Laxmipur of Haripur municipality.

Abdul Shah Phakir of Pharhadawa allegedly murdered his spouse Ida Khatun accusing her of not meeting his dowry expectations, said SP Naresh Raj Subedi of District Police Office Sarlahi. Phakir was reportedly torturing her mentally, emotionally and physically for not convincing her parents to gift him Rs 100,000.

Following his torture, Khatun left Phakir to live with her parents. She returned after the two families talked it out. But a few days later, Khatun was dead.

Her five-year-old son told Khatun’s father, Mansur Sah, that she had been killed. He said his daughter was beaten to death then hung to show she died by suicide. Police have arrested two on the charge of their involvement in the crime and Khatun’s body has been sent for post-mortem examinations.

Similarly, the body of Indrakala Devi Sah was seized by police from a cremation pyre over the suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

Police say Indrakala’s husband Rajaram Sah beat her leaving her severely injured for not meeting his dowry expectations. Police say she was left to die as Rajaram did not take her to hospital.

DSP Dipendra Panjiyar, from the District Police Office in Sarlahi, reported that the police took action to intercept the cremation of Indrakala’s body upon receiving information that it was taking place near the local Lakhandehi river.

The police swiftly gained control over the situation and assumed custody of the body that has been sent to Sarlahi Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Rajaram is on the run from the day of the incident.
