Rajendra Mahato, president of the Sadbhavana Party, a United Democratic Madheshi Front constituent, had plans to visit the Tarai instead of coming to Kathmandu from Delhi, where he underwent treatment for injuries he sustained during a recent clash with police in course of a UDMF protest at Biratnagar.
So, what made him visit Kathmandu? Mahato told journalists at the Tribhuvan International Airport that he decided to come to Kathmandu after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli invited him, assuring him that the Madhesh crisis will end soon.
“I had made up mind to go straight to the Madhesh. But then the prime minister called me up and invited me to come to Kathmandu, assuring that the problem will end. I have come, with a sense of optimism.”
In Kathmandu, Mahato has a busy schedule. On Sunday evening, he is meeting Prime Minister Oli. While on Monday, he is meeting other leaders including Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala and UCPN-Maoist Chair Prachanda. “Prime Minister has said the Madhesh problem will end. Let the same happen.”
We too are in favour of addressing the problem, he said, stressing the need to address the problem through constitution amendment incorporating Madhesh’s demands.
The solution is in the hands of the prime minister and the three political parties, he said referring to the CPN-UML, the Nepali Congress and the Maoist party.
The constitution amendment will take time, Mahato said, adding: There should be a guarantee that province delineation will happen as per Madhesh’s demands.
