Kathmandu, December 26
The Institute of Medicine (IoM) and Save IoM Struggle Committee reached a six-point agreement on Monday. After reaching the deal, the committee ended the three-week-long IoM lockout by lifting the lock.
The two sides have agreed to initiate open discussions on Dr Ramesh Kanta Adhikari’s report on appointment of IoM dean, amend the same as per the need and get it approved through the Tribhuvan University Senate. They agreed on following the same process for the appointment of IoM dean in future.
They have agreed to end the practice of enforcing shutdowns and strikes against IoM appointments that are in keeping with the law and standard practice.
As per the agreement, the two sides will establish the tradition of holding discussions with all stakeholders and making transparent policy decisions on matters that affect the IoM in the long run. They agreed to stand together in the interest of IoM and take into consideration factors like seniority, qualification, performance and organisational loyalty during the appointment of IoM officials. The two sides agreed to form a committee for setting criteria on appointment of IoM dean in a transparent manner.
They also agreed to include TU Professors’ Association (Maharagunj) as a member of the Academic Council, invite the association compulsorily at council meetings and have decisions endorsed by joint committees of office-bearers, faculty chief and struggle committee representatives.
After the agreement, IoM dean Dr Jagdish Prasad Agrawal entered the dean’s office on Monday. Before this, the dean had been discharging his duties from the Malego Building on IoM premises.
At the call of Dr Govinda KC, the struggle committee had enforced the IoM lockout against Dr Agrawal’s appointment as IoM dean.
