Writ filed at Supreme Court, seeking implementation of local level restructuring report

Kathmandu, February 13

A group of lawyers, including Chiranjivi Nepal, has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court demanding implementation of the report of the Local Level Restructuring Commission.

The court has scheduled a hearing on the writ on Tuesday.

Advocate Nepal said: (The government) has said it will conduct elections in Baishakh-Jestha. But it has not categorically stated  whether it will conduct local bodies’ elections or local level elections.

He said they filed the petition demanding elections on the basis of the commission’s report. The petitioners have urged government authorities to make the report public without delay and conduct elections based on the report.

Meanwhile, the court has said it will issue its verdict on a writ that seeks to know whether the government should conduct local level or local bodies’ elections.

The commission has already submitted its report proposing 719 local bodies in total. For his part, the government has formed a taskforce, giving it 15 days to study the report.
