UML opposes Election Commission’s consent to post-budget polls

CPN-UML Standing Committee meeting in Chairman KP Sharma Oli’s residence in Balkot of Bhaktapur.

Kathmandu, April 25

The main opposition CPN-UML on Tuesday objected to the statement given by the Election Commission that the government could present the annual budget for next fiscal between two phases of local level elections.

Expressing concerns over Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav’s statement, the UML Standing Committee decided to draw the attention of the constitutional body to the issue in writing.

The party assigned leader Subas Chandra Nembang to communicate with the Commission in this regard.

The meeting reiterated that the second phase of elections after the budget announcement would not be acceptable at any cost.

“If the polls are to be held in two phases, they should be held before the budget announcement,” UML Secretary Gokarna Bista told Onlinekhabar after the meeting, “All senior leaders including the Chairperson have objected to the Election Commission’s consent to the government’s conspiracy.”

The party has been arguing that the government is planning to influence the voters by announcing new programmes in the budget statement, which the constitution requires to be delivered on May 29.

The government has already decided to hold the second phase elections on June 14.
