Kathmandu, October 27
The leftist alliance comprising CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre are preparing to field former President of Nepal Bar Association, Shambhu Thapa, as its candidate for the House of Representatives first-past-the-post elections in Kathmandu-1.
Nepali Congress leader Prakash Man Singh and Bibeksheel Sajha Party coordinator Rabindra Mishra have also announced their candidacy for the constituency.
The leftist alliance has decided to propose Thapa as he could attract some more votes from intellectuals of the constituency as the constituent parties lacked a strong candidate to challenge Singh and Mishra within the parties.
Top UML leaders have already approached the senior advocate with the proposal, but Thapa is yet to give them answer, according to a source.
Earlier, in two Constituent Assembly elections in 2008 and 2013, Singh had secured landslide victory against the UML candidates. However, he is not that much safe this time as the two communist parties have partnered against him.
Records from recent local level elections in four wards of Kathmandu Metropolitan City that constitute this constituency show that the Congress still holds the highest votes here. But, if the votes of UML and Maoists are put together, it will fall shorter by more than 2,000 votes.
