Kathmandu, October 7
The government on Wednesday formed a three-member team to hold talks with medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC who is staging a fast-unto-death in Kathmandu.
The government formed the team on the 24th day of the indefinite hunger strike, the 19th that the senior orthopaedic surgeon staged demanding various reforms in the country’s medical education and health service sectors.
Gopi Nath Mainali, a secretary at the Ministry of Education, heads the team also comprising Health Ministry Join-Secretary Guna Raj Lohani and Medical Education Commission Director Dilip Sharma.
Mainali had held an informal meeting with Dr KC on Tuesday, urging the fasting doctor to end the strike.
Hours before the announcement of the talks team, the umbrella organisation of Nepali medical doctors, Nepal Medical Association, had announced various protest programmes including non-participation in treatment except for emergency and Covid-19 cases.
The government was under fire for not taking any initiatives for the talks though 24 days have passed since the beginning of the strike.
Meanwhile, doctors attending to him say the sexagenarian’s health condition is deteriorating.
