Kathmandu, March 4
The Supreme Court has issued an order in the name of the government to launch a comprehensive study in illegal and haphazard riverbed mining and submit its report to the court.
Hearing a writ petition filed by advocate Padam Bahadur Shrestha, the apex court observed today that the practice might have had an adverse impact on human life and the environment as claimed by the petitioner. Therefore, the court has told the government to form a high-level study team led by a secretary and prepare a comprehensive report.
Following the 2017 local elections, riverbed mining has seen a sharp rise across the country, forcing the environment to pay the price for local government officials’ greed.
