Surkhet, March 6
The Birendranagar city in the Surkhet district of Karnali is tense from early Sunday morning, over the death of a local trader who was allegedly beaten up by the police brutally.
As on Saturday, locals have shut the market and staged demonstrations at various places in the city. Likewise, no long- and short-route vehicles have operated there.
Krishna Hamal (25), a permanent resident of Tilagupha municipality-3 of the Kalikot district currently staying in Surkhet, was beaten up by the police on Friday evening as they tried to settle a dispute ensued under the influence of alcohol. Hamal had died on Saturday morning.
Following the incident, his family members, relatives and other locals have been claiming that Hamal died as police tortured him.
“We have been protesting for justice; we will continue until we get justice,” the deceased’s cousin Devi Krishna Pandey says.
The Surkhet District Police Office spokesperson Ram Prasad Gharti says the case is still being investigated. “We have mobilised the security personnel to prevent the demonstrations from turning violent.”
