Kathmandu, May 31
Tharkman Lama of Kavre has been arrested in connection with the smuggling of over 60 kg of gold.
The 45-year-old Lama, a resident of Temal Rural Municipality, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) in Lazimpat.
Tharkman, also known as Kanchchaman, is affiliated with the Nepali Congress.
Based on the report of the Gold Smuggling Investigation Commission, chaired by former judge Dilliraj Acharya, the CIB has commenced the second phase of the investigation. According to the CIB, Lama’s role appeared suspicious, prompting his arrest.
On July 18, 2023, the Department of Revenue Investigation seized more than 60 kg of gold that had passed customs checks at Tribhuvan International Airport. The CIB later took over the investigation into the gold smuggling.
